Simple Drum Filters

The Image Filter Room can easily create complex effects that would be painstaking to create with any other audio tools. This page demonstrates some techniques that can be used to process drum loops to impose harmonics on them or create rich stereo effects from even the most boring mono loop. These effects can be created in a matter of minutes by anyone familiar with the basics of the Image Filter and its painting tools.

The Image Filter can create much more dramatic effects than those demonstrated on this page. The goal of this page is to demonstrate some sounds and techniques that a MetaSynth beginner can expect to create.

This lesson is in-progress. It will be updated with more instructions and related links soon.

THE SOURCES

The examples on this page were created by running sounds through Image Filters. Two sounds are used: a raw unprocessed drum loop (created in the Image Synth) and a "reso" version. We created the "reso" version by running the raw loop through the Resonator and Inertia effects in the Effects Room. NOTE: The pitched resonance is useful when you plan to use tuned harmonic filters on unpitched sources like drums or wind.

Please be patient as the examples load. Some machines may stutter during playback if sounds are still loading.

Simple Image Filter Room Preset

It is often useful to start with simple image and add details in stages. Below is a simple Image Filter created by editing one of the sweep filters found in the default filter library.

Filter created by manipulating the filter above. The Fit to Scale Image Synth command was applied to some portions of the filter with a 4 note scale to impose some tonality. The Red and Green channels were manipulated independently to create a rich stereo effect.

This filter was created by analyzing a different drum loop to the Image Filter and then painting in the high frequency sweep. By drawing in the solid yellow at the bottom of the image, we allow all the low-frequencies to pass-through unchanged.

A variation of the filter shown above. The Quantize picture effect was used to create blocks of pixels. This is a nice technique for adding rhytmic effects. Use quantized images on continuous pads to impose a rhythmic quality.

Filter created by using Filter To Scale on an all yellow (all-pass) filter. The same scale is being applied to the entire picture but you could apply scales selectively to different portions.
